Scabbards

A scabbard, by definition, is a special sheath for bladed weapons, as well as for cutting or piercing instruments.

The traditional manufacturing materials for a scabbard are very diverse, so you can find leather, wood, and even bronze or steel scabbards.

Parts of a scabbard

Despite its apparent simplicity, we can distinguish different parts of a scabbard:

·         Throat or Chape: this is the opening of the sheath through which the blade of the weapon is inserted.

·         Scabbard body: this is the space that covers the blade once it has been inserted through the chape.

·         Hook or ring: this is a part of the scabbard that facilitates the entry of the blade. It is shaped like a hook or ring, hence its name.

·         Shoe or Drag: this is an extension of the scabbard that serves to protect both the scabbard itself and its owner from unexpected cuts in case the scabbard is accidentally perforated by the blade itself.

·         Metal tip: this is the part of the scabbard located at its end and serves to prevent the blade from scratching and perforating the sheath. Not all scabbards have this part. Leather scabbards usually have it due to their evident greater fragility against a well-sharpened blade.

Saya or Japanese Scabbard

We must mention the special scabbards for oriental weapons, mainly for katanas, as they have certain peculiarities.

Katana scabbards are called Saya. It is a scabbard that is specially designed to sheathe and unsheathe the katana as quickly as possible. The saya was made of lightweight wood, and its outer surface was lacquered. This type of wood, on the one hand, reduced the total weight of the katana, but at the same time made the sheath fragile. This required special care when sheathing so as not to damage either the saya or oneself.

A saya, like a common scabbard, has different parts:

·         Kurigata: forms part of one side of the sheath and serves to attach a cord called a sageo.

·         Obi: this is the body of the Japanese scabbard itself.

·         Kojiri: also known as the metal tip, it is at the lower end of the saya and serves to protect it from the tip of the katana blade. Not all sayas have this part.

A scabbard is a fundamental element that forms a set with a sword. It not only protects it but also allows you to transport your precious weapon wherever you want, whether to a medieval reenactment or simply to your friend's house to show it off at a themed party.
