Halberd, a polearm with a wooden shaft about two meters long, which has on its "head of arms" a spear point as the top spike, a transverse axe-blade on one side, and another smaller spike or hook on the opposite side.

Used in China since ancient times, its medieval form was introduced to Europe around 1300 by the Germans and Scandinavians. Its popularity grew with the Swiss mercenaries. It was used with great success as an infantry weapon from the end of the Middle Ages, facing troops with heavy cavalry.

Many elite troops or noble corps carried "ostentatious" versions of it. Today, the Spanish Royal Halberdier Guards or the Vatican's Swiss Guard use this weapon not only ceremonially, but are also trained to employ it as a combat weapon.
