A full suit of armor consists of numerous articulated pieces, with up to 250 pieces having been assembled on a single combatant, weighing about 25 to 30 kg. However, the most common and important pieces are reduced to about 25, distributed among the four groups of head, torso, and upper and lower limbs.
The head armor, whose main purpose is to cover and defend the head, was in general use throughout Europe until the 12th century, at the end of which the helmet appeared (…). Soon, the predominance of firearms banished even the last vestiges of armor, with the helmet being replaced almost everywhere by other lighter head coverings.
