German Gothic Sallet Helmet with bevor
This Sallet combat helmet (also known as celata, salade or schaller) was very popular in Germany. A substitute for the Italian bascinet, it was very popular throughout Europe. German Combat Helmet, Sallet type with bevor, an armor piece used to protect the lower part of the face.
This helmet was highly prized by knights and men-at-arms alike for both foot and mounted combat. This type of helmet, Salade or English Sallet, possibly originated in France or Burgundy. It was made with a long tail to protect the back of the head and neck. This design includes a chin and throat protector. The original is believed to be English and dates from around 1480.
