The Celtic people lived during the Iron Age, dominating most of Western and Central Europe. Despite sharing a common language and cultural traits, they were all warrior peoples and therefore fought among themselves. Tribal warfare was more focused on raids and hunting than organized territorial conquest, lacking military science.

Weapons were almost sacred objects for the ancient Celts, and they showed special care for them. Those designed for the battlefield were more sober and functional, while ceremonial ones were much more elaborate (like the scabbard of the Pintia dagger).

The Celtic warrior wore armor, a shield, a spear, a javelin, and even harnesses for mounts. But where artisans showed their greatest creativity was in the hilts of the weapon par excellence: the sword. They decorated their large hilts, which required enormous blades, with precious stones, ivory, or enamels. They also adorned themselves with original human figures or animal heads, like their helmets.

Celtic warriors performed a chorus of chants, hurled provocations and insults at their enemies, and blew their terrifying battle horn or carnyx, to intimidate the enemy and prepare their minds to adequately face combat.
