Pope Clement III (1187-1191) promoted the Third Crusade in which kings participated: Frederick I Barbarossa of Germany; Philip II of France and Richard I the Lionheart of England. Barbarossa, so-called for the color of his hair, was the boldest and most courageous; he had no difficulty defeating the enemy that stood in the way of the conquest of Jerusalem. He was the first to arrive, but he could not finish the conquest because he drowned in the river on June 10, 1190. His allies, Richard the Lionheart and Philip II, had to return to their respective countries, as John Lackland's dealings for Richard and the conflicts between England and France hastened their returns.
