Christopher Columbus was a navigator, cartographer, admiral, viceroy, and governor-general of the West Indies in the service of the Crown of Castile. He began as a modest craftsman and merchant who became familiar with the sea through coastal navigation for commercial purposes.

He made four voyages to the Indies in 1507, and although he was possibly not the first European explorer of America, he is considered the discoverer of a new continent, the New World, as he was the first to chart a round-trip route across the Atlantic Ocean and spread the news. This event decisively propelled the global expansion of European civilization, and the conquest and colonization of the American continent by several of its powers.

A wise geographer and intelligent sailor, he conceived and developed his colossal project of exploring the Indies in the western seas, a project he offered to several European courts and magnates and which met with strong opposition due to distrust of the enterprise. He challenged the most widespread beliefs of his time, upholding his theory of the sphericity of the Earth.

Only after twenty years of numerous setbacks did he gain the support in Spain of the Catholic Monarchs. He was granted three caravels, the Pinta, the Niña, and the Santa Maria, and on August 3, 1492, he set sail from the port of Palos. On October 12 of the same year, he landed on American soil and disembarked on the island of Guanahani (San Salvador), and the DISCOVERY OF AMERICA began.

Christopher Columbus's Sword appears in numerous paintings of the discovery of America and is therefore one of the most popular and well-known.
