Excalibur is the most widely accepted name for the legendary sword of King Arthur, to which various extraordinary properties have been attributed.

There are several theories regarding the origin of its name. One of the most accepted is that it comes from the Latin "EX Calce Liberatus," "Liberated from the Stone." Others believe that Excalibur means "To Cut Steel," referring to one of its many magical properties.

Legend has it that, upon the death of King Uther Pendragon, Merlin forged a sword (Excalibur) on the Isle of Avalon (The Isle of Fairies) and plunged it into a stone in London near a Chapel.

The most widespread legend states that Arthur managed to pull it from the stone through an act of magic by Merlin. The sword was kept in a scabbard that prevented the King from losing blood when he carried it into battles. Nearing death, Arthur instructed his Knight to throw the sword into the lake where Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, resided. When he throws it, a hand clad in white silk grasps it and takes it into the depths.

It is said that the sword rests with the King in Avalon, awaiting his return.

"THIS IS THE SWORD EXCALIBUR. WHOEVER PULLS IT FROM THIS ANVIL SHALL BE KING OF ENGLAND."
