Ferdinand III of Castile, known as the Saint, was king of Castile (1217 – 1252) and León (1230 – 1252). Son of Berenguela I, Queen of Castile, and Alfonso IX, King of León, he unified the crowns of Castile and León during his reign. He was canonized in 1671, during the papacy of Clement X and the reign of Charles II in Spain.

A great promoter of the Reconquista process, he conquered the cities of Seville, capital of the Almohads, Jaén, Córdoba, whose mosque he transformed into a cathedral, and Murcia, forcing the Muslim kingdoms to retreat.

He imposed Castilian as the official language of his kingdoms, replacing Latin, and sought to unify and centralize the administration of the Castilian and Leonese kingdoms. He distributed the newly conquered lands among military orders, the Church, and nobles, leading to the formation of large estates. In the cultural and religious spheres, he ordered the construction of the cathedrals of Burgos and León. He ensured that music and eloquent literary speech were given importance at his court: his son, King Alfonso X the Wise, was one of the great promoters of culture in the Middle Ages.

The body of King Ferdinand III the Saint was buried in Seville Cathedral, three days after his death.

His son Alfonso X the Wise, in one of his works, "Las Siete Partidas," highlighted the four values that every sword should embody: Prudence, Fortitude, Moderation, and Justice.

His famous sword is known as the Lobera Sword, today preserved as a relic in Seville Cathedral, from where it is taken out in procession every year to commemorate the Reconquista of Seville in 1248. It was Ferdinand III's symbol of power, and thus he appears in many engravings, with sword and orb in hand, instead of the traditional scepter. On his deathbed, Ferdinand III, addressing his younger son, Infante D. Manuel, said to him: "I cannot give you any inheritance, but I give you my sword Lobera, which is a thing of great virtue and with which God did me much good." The Lobera was a faithful companion on his glorious path, serving as an altar for his prayers and a righteous scepter in his royal duties.
