Saint George was a soldier in the Roman army who was later venerated as a Christian martyr. His parents were Christians of Greek origin; his father Gerontius was an officer in the Roman army from Cappadocia and his mother Polychronia was a Christian from Lydda in the Roman province of Syria Palaestina (Palestine).
At the age of 14, George decided to go to Nicomedia and present himself to Emperor Diocletian to request a career as a soldier. Diocletian welcomed him with open arms, as he had known his father, Gerontius, one of his best soldiers. In his late 20s, George was promoted to the rank of Tribunus and was assigned as the Emperor's imperial guard in Nicomedia. Diocletian (influenced by Galerius) issued an edict that every Christian soldier in the army should be arrested and that any other soldier should offer a sacrifice to the Roman gods of the time. However, George opposed, and with the courage of his faith, approached the emperor and the ruler. Diocletian was upset, as he did not want to lose his best tribune and the son of his best officer, Gerontius. But George loudly renounced the Emperor's edict, and in front of his fellow soldiers and tribunes declared himself a Christian and declared his worship of Jesus Christ. Diocletian tried to convert George, even offering gifts of land, money, and slaves if he made a sacrifice to the Roman gods. He made many offers, but George never accepted. George was executed by beheading before the city wall of Nicomedia, on April 23, 303. A witness to his suffering convinced Empress Alexandra and Athanasius, a pagan priest, to also convert to Christians, so they joined George in martyrdom. His body was returned to Lydda for burial, where Christians soon honored him as a martyr.
Saint George became an officer in the Roman army in Diocletian's Guard, who ordered his death for not retracting his Christian faith.
Saint George is one of the most revered saints in the Catholic Church and other Churches. He is immortalized in the myth of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.
The episode of Saint George and the Dragon was a legend brought back with the Crusades and told with the courtly accessories belonging to the Romance genre.
The coat of arms and banner attributed to Saint George take the form of a red cross on white or silver, known as the Cross of Saint George. Saint George is most commonly depicted in early icons, mosaics, with armor contemporary to the painting, executed in gold and silver color, with the intention of identifying him as a Roman soldier.
