Romantic legend and tradition define the Vikings as a group of northern barbarians who practiced piracy and spread their fury across Europe, crowned with horned helmets and sword in hand, and deployed in their ships as bloodthirsty warriors.

The Vikings enjoyed superiority at sea due to their shipbuilding engineering. With their ships, they began an expansion not only across European lands but also reached the East and present-day North American territory. In their expansion, they primarily sought to open new markets for trade and acquire new lands for agricultural exploitation to increase their power and wealth.

The Viking soldier prepared for battle by covering his body with leather or chainmail; they covered their heads with a conical metal helmet that often had metal or leather protectors for the nose and cheeks and a circular wooden shield, usually covered with iron plates.

The Viking sword was one of the most commonly used weapons during the Viking Age. The Viking sword was a truly effective weapon on the battlefield; it was treated with a certain reverence, especially in the case of old swords that had been passed down through generations or plundered from conflicts.

The Viking sword was designed for cutting, thanks to its double edge, rather than for thrusting. It was intended to be wielded with one hand, as the hilt was very short, so with the other hand, the Viking held the protective shield.

Viking swords evolved into new typologies, adapting to changing warfare strategies.

The Viking sword was the favorite weapon of Scandinavian warriors, and they entrusted their lives to it: “[...] You shall have no tent but the firmament: the Viking is content with that; sleep on your shield, your sword in hand; never lock yourself in, there is nothing unsafe, do not fear to face your adversary at close quarters...” (Esaias Tegner “Frithiofs Saga”)
