Gauntlets or mittens were part of the armor worn by knights in medieval times. They were metal gloves used to protect their fingers, hands, wrist area, and part of the forearm in the brutal battles of the era.

During the 11th and 12th centuries, they consisted of a simple mail sack with an opening at the cuff to allow the hand to be removed.

They later became leather gloves with an iron disc over the back of the hand and others made of mail that buttoned over the sleeve. In the 14th century, the fingers were separated, up until the mid-16th century, to allow for firing the pistol.

In many 15th-century and early 16th-century tournament armors, the left hand had a gauntlet with separated fingers, and the right, for the lance, was protected by a mitten.
