Gauntlets or armored mittens were part of the armor worn by knights in the medieval era. They were metal gloves used to protect their fingers, hands, wrist area, and part of the forearm in the bloody battles of the time.

During the 11th and 12th centuries, they consisted of a simple mail coif with an opening at the cuff to allow the hand to be removed.

They evolved into leather gloves with an iron rondel over the back and others of mail that buttoned over the sleeve. In the 14th century, the fingers were separated, until the mid-16th century, to allow for firing the pistol.

In many 15th and early 16th-century tournament armors, the left hand had a separated-finger gauntlet and the right, for the lance, was protected by a mitten.
