The shield is the oldest active defensive weapon used to protect against offensive weapons and for attack.
It is commonly held on the left arm and helps cover the body from blows without preventing the use of the right arm for counterattacking.
It underwent major modifications in both materials and shape, either over time or across geographical regions, adapting to technological changes or tactics to ensure maximum protection for combatants.
Made from different materials such as leather, very resistant to arrows and spears; linen, copper, bronze and, above all, wood.
The shield was not usually abandoned for reasons of honor. Not abandoning one's shield on the battlefield was interpreted as a symbol of the warrior's courage.
