The Order of the Temple, whose members are known as Knights Templar, was one of the most powerful Christian Military Orders of the Middle Ages.
It was founded in 1118 by nine French Knights led by Hugues de Payens after the First Crusade. Its purpose was to protect the lives of Christians making pilgrimages to Jerusalem after the First Crusade.
The Catholic Church recognized it as an Order during the Council of Troyes in 1129. The Order quickly grew in size and power.
The Knights Templar were Knights of God, an honor to the Church and Christianity. They used a white mantle with a red patée cross as their distinguishing mark. Militarily, its members were among the best-trained units participating in the Crusades.
"NON NOBIS, DOMINE, NON NONBIS, SED TUO NOMINI DA GLORIAM."
For a century, they ensured the effective governance of the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. The loss of the Holy Land led to the disappearance of support for the Order.
